| Par |
|
The number of strokes assigned to a hole or to a course overall. Par for a hole is determined by the number of strokes necessary to reach the green plus two putts. For example: a par three means one shot to reach the green and two putts. Par for a course is determined by the sum of par for each hole. |

|
The number of strokes added to the score due to a rule infraction. |
| Perched lie |
|
Situation where the ball finishes suspended above the ground in the rough. In the US this is known as a fluffy lie. |

| Pin |
|
Another word for flagstick. |
| Pin high |
|
Also known as hole high. A ball has been played as far as the placement of the hole and any distance on either side. |
| Pitch |
|
A lofted short shot to the green with a little run at the end of its flight. |
| Pitch and run |
|
A long chip. The ball is pitched onto the edge of the green allowing for the ball to run to the hole. |

| Pitching Wedge |

A club with a steeper face, used when close to the hole. |
| Plugged lie |
|
Situation where a ball remains in the indentation of plug mark when it lands. Except under a local rule that permits a plugged ball to be lifted and moved but not closer to the hole without incurring a penalty, a plugged ball must be played where it lies. |
| Plumb-bob |
|
A technique used to help determine the break of a putt. |
| Plus handicap |
|
A handicap less than the scratch score of the course. Plus handicap players have strokes added to their score because they regularly beat the standard scratch score in medal play. |
| Pot Bunker |
|
Small round and deep bunker found on English courses. |

|
The ritualistic procedure performed before every shot. |

|
The first cut of longer grass you encounter when leaving the fairway. |
| Private club |
|
A golf club open only to members and their guests. |
| Pro-am |
|
A tournament that teams up professionals and amateurs. |
| Professional |
|
Someone who is paid for playing golf. |
| Pro shop |
|
The store in the clubhouse where you check in to play and can buy equipment. |
| Provisional shot |
|
A second shot, hit when you think the first ball might be lost. If you find the ball, the provisional shot does not count. |
| Public course |
|
A golf course that anyone can play on for a fee. See Greens fee. |
| Pull |
|
A straight shot that goes to the left of the target (for a right-handed player). |
| Punch shot |
|
A low recovery shot, usually hit out of some type of trouble. |
| Push |
|
A straight shot hit to the right of the target (by a right-handed golfer). |
| Putt |
|
A short stroke usually but not always made on the green, that makes the ball roll on the ground. |
| Putter |
|
A straight-faced club normally used to hit the ball on the putting green. |
