Face
       1. The surface of the club designed to strike the ball. 2. The steep slope of a bunker designed as part of the hazard.
Fade
A deliberate shot that starts left of the target line and curves slightly to the right (for a right-handed golfer). An unintentional fade is a slice.
Fairway
The closely mown area of grass, usually 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, running from the tee (where you hit your first shot) to the green. Its boundary is longer grass called the semi-rough or grass that has not been cut called the rough. It can have obstacles such as trees, bunkers or water hazards.
Fat or Fat Shot
Hitting the ground before the ball creating a divot.
Featheries
Early type of golf ball made by filling a leather pouch with boiled compressed feathers that went out of use around the 1880’s when the guttie was introduced.
Flagstick
The flagged pole that sticks out of the hole on each green.
Flex
The amount of bend in a club shaft.
Flier lie
What you end up with when grass comes between the club face and the ball, reducing the amount of backspin on the ball.
Flop shot
A type of pitch shot that travels high up into the air and lands softly.
Fluffy lie
Situation where the ball finishes suspended above the ground in the rough. In England this is known as a perched lie.
Follow-through
The path of your swing after you have made impact with the ball.
Fore
A warning call you should shout when your ball is headed for a person.
Forecaddie
A caddie ahead of the players to indicate the position of players shots as they come to rest.
Forged steel blade
A club where the head is made of softer forged steel, instead of the harder cast steel cavity-back irons are made of.
Four-ball match
A match where one pair of players selects the better positioned ball for their next shot against the better ball of another pair of players.
Foursome
1. A group of four players 2. a match between two pairs in which each pair plays one ball.
Free Drop
A ball is dropped without incurring a penalty away from an immovable obstruction in accordance with the Rules of Golf.
Fringe
The collar of grass surrounding the green, usually shorter in length than the fairway but longer than the green itself. See Collar.
Front nine
The first nine holes on an 18-hole golf course.
